To work for the Socio-Economic Empowerment and Welfare of Persons affected by Leprosy who reside in the leprosy colonies from 16 states overall India.
APAL
Association of People Affected by Leprosy (APAL) National Forum India was formed by and for the Persons affected by leprosy across the country and it was started informally in 2006. This initiative helped to have networked with the leprosy colonies. A National Conference on Integration & Empowerment of people affected by leprosy was conducted in New Delhi in 2005 and 2006 which helped to unite the people affected by leprosy from various parts of the country. Our Story
How We Got Started and Need of Establishment
In 2005, there was an effective cure for leprosy in India. However, it was crucial to diagnose cases early and treat them promptly to prevent the disease from progressing and causing permanent disability. Unfortunately, fear of stigma and discrimination often prevents people from seeking treatment openly, which means they may unknowingly transmit the disease to others. That’s why initiatives like strengthening, empowering, and community-led approaches are being actively promoted by TNF (The Nippon Foundation). Such efforts are critical to raising awareness and reducing discrimination, as well as removing barriers that prevent people from seeking medical help and empowering themselves economically. The Nippon Foundation’s consistent support and partnership with the National Forum have been community-focused approaches to initiate programs that are planned, led, and designed for the community. Both organizations are committed to joint action to achieve a common goal: an inclusive society where everyone’s rights are respected and can explicitly participate in society.

We are working with over 53,000 people affected by leprosy in 784 Colonies in 18 states in India
APAL has been working tirelessly to empower and strengthen grassroots-level individuals and state-level bodies, as well as leaders of affected communities. Through its dedicated efforts, APAL has been providing local communities with empowering and effective capacity-building training programmes on Human Rights and leadership training for state leaders at the grassroots level. These initiatives are aimed at empowering individuals and communities to advocate for their rights and lead positive change in their communities
