On the 26th of May 2024, APAL’s State Committee of Madhya Pradesh convened a crucial discussion with Shri Pushpa Mitra Bhargava, the Mayor of Indore, concerning the maintenance allowance provided by the Municipal Corporation to individuals affected by leprosy. This meeting signified a significant stride towards addressing the financial support required by these patients, culminating in the submission of a memorandum to the Mayor outlining the concerns and needs of the leprosy-affected community.

The meeting was attended by key representatives from various organizations dedicated to leprosy prevention and support. Among them were Shri Sarang ji Gaydhane, the Secretary of the Association of People Affected by Leprosy, and Raju ji Rathore from the Sahyog Leprosy Prevention Association, along with Gopal Shinde, Bhamabai Sakhre, and Thakubai Gaikwad from the Sant Dnyaneshwar Leprosy Seva Samiti, who contributed their insights and experiences to the discussion.

The International Shirdi Sai Bhakta Seva Trust, a dedicated organization committed to supporting leprosy-affected individuals, orchestrated a benevolent distribution of school bags to 50 students from Intermediate to Degree level. This compassionate initiative was designed to nurture and bolster the educational aspirations of the students residing in these colonies.

The APAL’s state committee in Telangana (SLAP-TIS) played a pivotal role in this event, with State Coordinator Mr. Ramesh spearheading the distribution. The gesture was met with gratitude by the residents of both colonies, who conveyed their sincere appreciation to all members of the Shirdi Sai Trust. On 24th May 2024, The Association of People Affected by Leprosy (APAL) today convened a virtual State Coordinator’s monthly review meeting, marking a significant milestone in their ongoing dedication to addressing the challenges faced by individuals affected by leprosy and their families. The meeting served as a platform for in-depth discussions and collaborative problem-solving, focusing on the urgent issues affecting these marginalized communities.

Throughout the meeting, participants conducted a thorough assessment of the current circumstances of people affected by leprosy, meticulously examining the interconnected factors contributing to their vulnerability and marginalization. The dialogue encompassed a wide range of challenges, including socio-economic hardships, healthcare disparities, and deep-rooted stigma, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the issues faced by individuals and families affected by leprosy.

Leveraging collective expertise and lived experiences, the meeting catalyzed the exploration of advocacy solutions designed to address the systemic barriers impeding the full inclusion and empowerment of those affected by leprosy. The event was orchestrated by Ravi Garu, the Chief of Reliable Trust, a reputable organization committed to social welfare. This endeavour constituted a component of the ongoing campaign to assist marginalized communities and enhance their standard of living.

The program witnessed the participation of several prominent individuals, including Pirla Janaiah, the Councilor of the 3rd Ward, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Furthermore, Nagaraju, the President of the Ward Youth Congress Party, actively contributed to the event, underscoring the involvement of young political figures in social causes.

This distribution initiative was executed under the supervision of APAL’s state coordinator, Mr. Ramesh, who played a pivotal role. On 17th April 2024, Maya Ranavare, the esteemed President of APAL, attended a momentous civil felicitation ceremony in Maharashtra alongside APAL’s dedicated state committee to honour Sri Ram Naik, a Padma Bhushan recipient, for his remarkable 90 years of unwavering dedication to public service. This event provided a unique opportunity for Maya and her team to engage with government authorities, politicians, and various stakeholders, fostering meaningful dialogue on pressing social issues.

During the ceremony, Maya Ranavare seized the opportunity to present APAL’s annual report and manifesto concerning persons affected by leprosy and persons with disabilities, underscoring the organization’s commitment to advocating for inclusivity and social justice. She highlighted the staggering challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in India, including the disproportionate financial burden imposed on households, limited access to education and employment opportunities, and growing dependence on welfare assistance.

In her interactions with political leaders and stakeholders, Maya passionately advocated for tangible solutions to address the pressing social security needs of persons with disabilities. She emphasized the urgent need for a national pension standard, proposing a direct benefit transfer model that would provide a minimum of Rs 5000 per month to support individuals with disabilities. Additionally, Maya urged for the prioritization of inclusion in government security schemes such as the PM Awas Yojana and MNREGA, ensuring that persons with disabilities receive equitable access to essential services and opportunities.
