On 19th July 2024, APAL’s President, Maya Ranavare, alongside the State Committee in Rajasthan, embarked on a significant visit to various locations in Jaipur, including Gandhi Ashram, Garibdas Ashram, Jhotwara, and six leprosy colonies. Accompanied by other state coordinators and members, the team aimed to understand better the living conditions of those affected by leprosy. During their interactions with the residents and their families, they were confronted with the harsh realities faced by these communities. The poor living conditions underscored the urgent need for improved housing and social support systems.
The visit highlighted a critical gap in social entitlements, with many residents lacking access to essential benefits such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and disability pensions. These entitlements could significantly enhance their quality of life, providing them with stable housing and financial support. Maya Ranavare and the APAL team are committed to advocating for these necessary changes, aiming to ensure that the affected individuals receive the support and recognition they deserve from the government. Their visit not only shed light on the current challenges but also paved the way for future initiatives to uplift the leprosy-affected communities in Jaipur.
